Crane is the seat of Crane County, with 3,478 people at the 2020 census. It's the only significant town in the county and has its only post office.
What that means for your move
Crane is about 32 miles south of Odessa on US-385, so most moves involve a highway drive to or from Odessa or Midland. Ask the mover how they charge for the travel and whether they can schedule an early start so the job finishes in daylight. See local moving.
An oil boomtown
Crane's post office dates from 1908, but the town really grew after oil was discovered in the Permian Basin in 1926. By 1930 it was a full-fledged boomtown. Paved roads and other basic services came after the town incorporated in the early 1930s, and the town still serves a wide, sparsely populated county.
Moving with the oil field
Crane has been an oil town since the 1920s and is still in the middle of a busy oil-producing region. Workers and families move in and out with the industry, often from rentals and company housing on short notice. If you're moving out at the end of a job, ask about loading help with your own truck or a container. If you're moving in, sending your dates early helps. See loading and unloading help.
