Long-distance moves are priced differently from local ones, often by weight or volume and distance. The paperwork matters as much as the packing.
Request a moving quoteIn Texas or out of state
Moves within Texas are handled by movers registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Moves across state lines are regulated federally, and the mover needs a USDOT number. Ask which applies to your move and for the registration number.
How it's priced
Long-distance moves are usually based on the weight or volume of your belongings and the distance, plus packing and any extra services. An in-home or video survey gives a far more reliable quote than a guess over the phone.
Delivery windows
Your belongings may share a truck with other moves, so delivery is often given as a window of days rather than a single date. If you need a firm date, ask whether a dedicated truck is possible and what it costs.
Valuation and protection
Ask what level of protection is included if something is lost or damaged and whether you can choose more. Basic coverage is often limited, so check it against the value of what you're moving.
What to keep with you
Carry documents, jewelry, medication, laptops and anything irreplaceable in your own vehicle. Pack a first-night box with sheets, towels, chargers, basic tools and kitchen items.
Planning ahead
Book long-distance moves several weeks ahead, longer in summer. Get quotes in writing and read them before signing. See getting a moving quote. Send a request and a moving company will get in touch.
Inventory sheets
On a long-distance move the crew usually lists every item and its condition before loading. Read the inventory carefully and add notes if you disagree with a description, because the same list is used to check delivery at the other end.
