Garden City is the seat of Glasscock County, with 334 people at the 2020 census. It lies near the center of the county, 27 miles south of Big Spring.
What that means for your move
Rural moves out here involve long drives, country roads and properties with barns, shops and equipment. Movers need to know the road conditions, gate access and where the truck can park and turn. Ask about travel charges and whether a smaller truck suits the roads better. See furniture and appliance moving.
Named by mistake
The town's post office opened in 1886 in a general store owned by a man named Gardner. A clerical error by officials in Washington granted the post office under the name Garden City instead. With so few people in the county, there are no moving companies based in town, so crews usually come from Midland, Big Spring or San Angelo.
Plains and ranches
Garden City was the first Texas community platted by surveyor W. D. Twichell, and it became county seat when Glasscock County organized in 1893. Today it's a small ranching and oil community with wide, open country around it. Moves here are often from ranch houses or homes on acreage, with outbuildings to clear as well. Plan which items are going, which are staying and which are being sold before the crew arrives, so you only pay to move what you need. See packing room by room.
