Checking a Texas Moving Company Before You Book
Most moves go smoothly, but a few minutes of checking before you book protects your belongings and your deposit.

Companies that move household goods for pay within Texas must register with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles as a motor carrier, whatever the size of their truck. Ask for the TxDMV number and check it with the department.
Moves out of state
Movers who carry household goods across state lines are regulated federally and need a USDOT number. If you're leaving Texas, ask for it and check it before signing anything.
Insurance
Registered household goods carriers must keep insurance in force. For smaller trucks, the TxDMV lists minimum liability coverage of $300,000 and cargo coverage of $5,000 per vehicle. Ask what protection applies to your belongings and whether you can buy more.
Get it in writing
Ask for a written estimate that lists the services, rates and any extra charges, such as stairs, long carries, packing materials or travel time. Read it before moving day, not on the doorstep.
Red flags
A very low quote given without seeing your belongings, a large cash deposit up front, no company name on the truck or paperwork, or pressure to sign a blank or incomplete form.

Look for a real address
A moving company should have a physical business address, a working phone number and its name on the truck and the paperwork. Online reviews help, but check that they describe real moves in the area and not just a run of short, similar comments posted at the same time.
