Moving in West Texas Heat: Tips for a Summer Move
Summer is the busiest season for moving, and in Midland it's also the hottest. A little planning keeps everyone safe and your belongings in good shape.

Book the earliest start time you can, so most of the heavy lifting is done before the afternoon heat. Ask the mover whether they offer early-morning starts in summer.
Water and shade
Keep plenty of cold water and some shade available for everyone helping, including the moving crew. Heat illness comes on quickly when people are lifting all day.
Protect sensitive items
Electronics, candles, vinyl records, photos, medicines and plants can be damaged by heat in a closed truck. Carry them in your air-conditioned car instead.
Get the new place ready
Have the electricity and air conditioning on at the new home before moving day, so it's cool when the first boxes come through the door.
Dust and wind
Spring and summer winds carry a lot of dust. Wrap furniture in pads or sheets and keep boxes taped shut so dust doesn't get inside.
Book ahead
Summer dates fill quickly, especially at the start and end of the month. See local moving.
Mattresses and furniture
Wrap mattresses in bags and furniture in pads rather than tight plastic, which traps heat and moisture. Wood furniture and leather can crack or warp if they sit in a hot truck for hours, so plan to unload as soon as you arrive.
Pace the day
Take regular breaks in the shade or indoors, and don't let anyone push on when they feel dizzy or sick. A move that takes an hour longer is far better than someone getting heatstroke on the driveway.
