Getting a Moving Quote: What Movers Need to Know
The more a mover knows up front, the closer the quote will be to the final bill. Most surprises come from details nobody mentioned.

Walk the mover through every room, closet, the garage, attic, sheds and any storage unit, either in person or by video. Point out what isn't coming, too.
Mention the hard parts
Stairs, elevators, long walks from the door to the truck, narrow streets, gated communities and items that need taking apart all add time.
Heavy and special items
Pianos, safes, pool tables, large TVs, artwork and appliances may need extra people, equipment or packing. List them so the mover sends the right crew.
How it's priced
Local moves are usually by the hour; long-distance moves often by weight or volume and distance. Ask what's included: packing materials, fuel, travel time, assembly and disassembly.
Compare like with like
When you get more than one quote, check that each covers the same services and dates. The cheapest number isn't the best deal if it leaves out packing or travel time.
Confirm the details

Ask about the crew
Ask how many movers will come, what size truck they'll bring and whether the crew works for the company or is hired for the day. A crew that's too small for the job stretches an hourly move out and drives the price up.
Deposits and payment
Ask whether a deposit is needed to hold the date, how much, and whether it's refundable if your plans change. Find out how the final payment is made and when, so there are no surprises when the truck is unloaded.
